Typographic Character as Form

This project involves the exploration of positive and negative space of letterforms, using type hierarchy and the application of contrast.
This next stage of the project involved rapid iteration with letter pairings. One serif font, Adobe Jenson Pro, and one sans-serif, Futura, were selected for this project. Next, I chose five letters that would provide the most contrast based off of the overall form: A, G, J, Q, and W.  By strategically playing around with the placement of various letter pairings, five types of contrast are created: contrast of direction, weight, form, structure, and and texture.
After receiving peer feedback, 25 refined iterations were created (bottom right). In this stage, I experimented with font weight, as well as different styles such as italic and bold, to add contrast. and 5 final compositions were selected based off of the positive and negative space (pictured below).
From those five, a final composition was chosen based off the highest contrast. In this composition, a lowercase italicized g and capital G are paired together. The capital G is placed in between the negative space of the bowl and tail of the lowercase g to draw attention to the contrast of structure. This contrast of structure and direction is emphasized by the cropping of the lowercase g. In addition, the cropping puts a focus on the variation of the curvilinear lines of the lowercase g, whereas the capital G is a consistent weight throughout its entire form.
